Lieutenant-General William Tecumseh Sherman, enlisted men for regiments of colored regulars under the Act of Congress approved July 28 1866. This Calvary Regiment would be entitled the 10th Regiment United States Cavalry, and named Fort Leavenworth, Kansas as its head quarters. [1]
